How to Manage Discomfort Caused by Invisalign Aligners

Invisalign is a transparent tooth movement system that is more easily managed for patients and does not create the discomfort of metal wires and brackets. Although Invisalign is much more comfortable than traditional braces, it can still cause discomfort, especially at the start of treatment or after an aligner change. Learning how to combat the discomfort will make your orthodontic treatment more enjoyable.

Invisalign Can Cause Minor Discomfort

Invisalign allows you to remove your aligner trays when eating, brushing, and flossing. You also don’t have to worry about the embarrassment of having a mouth full of metal.

Some patients report minor discomfort when starting with Invisalign and sometimes periodically throughout treatment. As you adjust to wearing your clear aligners, the discomfort should subside, but there are things you can do to get relief now.

Effective Ways to Reduce Invisalign Discomfort

Most people feel a small amount of discomfort is worth having a straightened smile they can feel proud of. For the rare times when the discomfort grows, we recommend the following for our patients in Caledonia, MI:

1. Eat Soft Foods

When your teeth feel sore, eating a soft foods diet is recommended. Eating soups, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs can be great options for your comfort. Work your way back up to normal foods, as this will aid in the process of making your teeth feel less sore.

2. Stick to the Invisalign Schedule

Patient compliance is critical for comfort and success. You should wear your aligners at least 22 hours a day. Taking your aligners out too often can increase discomfort during wear and make treatment less effective. Your teeth will shift into the position of the aligner, then move back when the aligners are removed.

We use an app called Dental Monitoring (cross link this text please) to help determine the best timing to swap aligners. Stick to the schedule drawn out by Dr. Swan in your app for the best results.

3. Take Over-the-Counter Pain Medications

Tylenol and Ibuprofen can be used in the short term to alleviate discomfort that does not respond to the above options. If you have significant discomfort, call us at Swan Orthodontics to schedule a visit.
