Braces vs. Invisalign: Which One Is Right for You?

Two Great Paths to a Beautiful Smile

If you've been thinking about orthodontic treatment, there's a good chance you've already wondered about this: braces or Invisalign? Both options work. Both get results. But they're not identical, and the right choice depends on your lifestyle, your goals, and what your orthodontist recommends for your specific smile.

At Swan Orthodontics, we offer both treatments for kids, teens, and adults in Grand Rapids and the surrounding communities. Here's a straightforward look at how they compare.

How Traditional Braces Work

Braces use brackets bonded to your teeth and connected by wires that are gradually adjusted over time to shift your teeth into alignment. They're fixed, meaning they stay on throughout your treatment.

Modern braces are more comfortable and less bulky than they used to be. And because they're always working (you can't forget to put them in), they're a reliable option for a wide range of cases, including more complex ones. For kids and younger teens especially, braces take the guesswork out of compliance.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners that are custom-made for your teeth. You swap to a new set of aligners every one to two weeks as your smile gradually shifts into place.

Because they're removable, you can take them out to eat, drink, brush, and floss. And because they're nearly invisible, most people won't even notice you're wearing them. Invisalign is a popular choice for teens and adults who want effective treatment without the visible hardware.

The Big Differences to Consider

Visibility. Invisalign aligners are clear and subtle. Braces are more visible, though many patients enjoy customizing their brackets with colored bands.

Compliance. Invisalign works best when you wear your aligners 20 to 22 hours a day. If you're the type who might leave them out too often, braces take that variable off the table.

Maintenance. With braces, there are foods you'll need to avoid and some extra care involved in brushing and flossing around the brackets. Invisalign lets you eat whatever you like and brush your teeth normally since you remove the aligners first.

Treatment range. Braces can address a wider range of complex cases. Invisalign handles many of the same concerns but may not be the right fit for every situation. Our orthodontist will let you know which option makes the most clinical sense for your teeth.

There's No Wrong Answer

Both treatments produce beautiful, lasting results. The best choice is the one that fits your life and gets you to your goal smile efficiently. And the only way to know for sure which one is right for you is to sit down with our orthodontist and take a look at your specific situation.
