Choosing Between Invisalign Treatment or Braces

Braces or Invisalign: Which Option is Right for You?

The road to a perfect and beautiful smile has many different paths. Unfortunately, when it comes to choosing which one is right for you, all of the pros, cons, and in-betweens, can make the choice confusing and difficult. One of the universal predicaments many people face when seeking orthodontic intervention is whether to go with standard treatments, like braces, or new age perfective alignments like Invisalign. But with the guidance of a skilled and experienced provider, like Dr. Kathryn Swan at Swan Orthodontics, you can confidently choose the treatment that is best for you. At the local Caledonia MI based practice of SWAN ORTHODONTICS, we offer useful information on both options, so no matter what treatment you choose, you can be ensured you’re making the most informed decision.

Do Your Research and Seek Expert Advice Before Making a Decision

When you make any significant decision, it is imperative to do comprehensive research utilizing many different sources to discover the most unbiased opinions. One way to learn about a specific treatment is by reading first-hand accounts of the treatment from individuals that experienced it themselves with online reviews. Attending a consultation at your orthodontists office is also a great way to have all of your questions answered. Your orthodontists level of experience with using Invisalign aligners, will also affect whether or not they recommend braces or clear aligners. In this case, it may be important to seek out a second opinion.

The Pros and Cons of Braces and Invisalign

Although braces and Invisalign are both efficient in treating crooked teeth and misaligned bites, each treatment has their own pros and cons. Despite the large amount of people with braces, the aesthetics of this treatment are not always pleasing to most individuals. Invisalign, on the other hand, provides the same results in a more inconspicuous way. Because Invisalign trays are made with a clear plastic, they are virtually invisible when worn. They are also easy to remove which makes eating and cleaning more convenient. However, the aligners must be worn for at least 20–22 hours a day. Because braces are worn 24/7, tooth movement may prefer conventional braces. The metal and ceramic in braces do prove more difficult to clean, and may prevent you from enjoying certain foods during treatment.

The Cost and Treatment Time of Braces and Invisalign

Cost and timeline of treatment are another important distinction and consideration when deciding between treatment with braces or Invisalign. At Swan Orthodontics, the cost of both treatments is the same. While this is the case for our practice, other orthodontists may still charge relatively higher than normal for Invisalign because of how much it costs to make the aligners. As to the treatment time, it is also different since on average Invisalign lasts a shorter length of time. However, conventional braces have the capacity to treat more severe cases but require treatment time that can go up to approximately 2 years.

Factors That Affect Treatment Length

Certain variables determine the treatment length of braces or Invisalign. Some of these factors include severity of orthodontic problem, amount of affected teeth,  bite defects, impacted teeth, and age of teeth or patient. That is why, it is essential to discuss these factors with your orthodontist when you come in for a consultation session.
