What is Invisalign First?

Invisalign First treatment is designed for little smiles and is a perfect orthodontic treatment for children ages 7-12 years old. This is considered a phase one treatment and is meant to develop the jaws and arches of younger patients. They make room for the existing teeth and the incoming permanent teeth and can work on crowding, spacing, and narrow dental arches.

Why Would I Want Invisalign First?

Invisalign First clear aligners are perfect for any child age 7-12 who are struggling with crowding, spacing, and narrow dental arches. It's also meant to help develop young patients' jaw development and to increase the amount of space for the upcoming permanent teeth. Children with overbites, underbites, and crossbites are also ideal candidates for these clear aligners.

Patients also need to have permanent first molars and at least two incisors that are at least 2/3 of the way erupted.

That said, the young children should also be able and willing to wear their aligners 20 or more hours per day and switch to new aligners when required.

You may also choose this option for your child (instead of traditional braces) due to the lack of food restrictions, easy hygiene due to the ability of the aligners to be removed, and comfort.

How Does Invisalign First Work?

The Invisalign First treatment is relatively straightforward. The process will begin with the initial scans. We will take a digital scan of your child's teeth. Using these scans, we will create the customized aligners that fit your child's specific teeth. Unlike the traditional Invisalign aligners, these are specifically designed to fit smaller teeth and accommodate the teeth that are still growing in.

Once your child’s first aligners are in, they will wear them for a week or more at a time and then change them out as their teeth shift into place. As they shift, you will see their smile transform little by little.

For patients who need to expand and widen their upper arch, the Invisalign Palatal Expander (IPE) may be needed. And because there is no metal involved in this expander, there is no need to worry about broken wires or the discomfort that comes with metal dental arch expansion.

The treatment can take anywhere from 6 to 18 months, depending on the amount of changes needed and the final results required.
